When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

For many people, removing wisdom teeth is essential, but not a necessity for everyone, but when it becomes necessary, you really shouldn’t postpone seeing your dentist. If you are having pain or discomfort in your teeth, your dentist may recommend that you remove your wisdom teeth.

WHAT’S THE REASON WISDOM TEETH NEED TO BE REMOVED?

There are numerous reasons why wisdom teeth need to be removed. Wisdom teeth are the third and last set of molars that generally do not come in until you are in your late teens. They are located along the very back of the row of teeth. Because of their position, they often do not have enough room to develop fully. So naturally, as they push their way in, they cause discomfort and pain, and usually misalignment of other teeth near to them. Bacteria buildup can also occur, which can lead to further damage to your teeth. For obvious reasons when this happens, it is best to call your dentist to have your wisdom tooth/teeth removed.

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD YOUR WISDOM TEETH BE REMOVED?

The rate at which wisdom teeth develop varies from person to person. Many people never need them removed. Those that do will begin to notice problems, such as pain and or swelling, in their late teen years or early 20’s. They do not have to be removed until they become a problem. However, some people don’t want to wait until problems raise their ugly heads and so they take preemptive measures to have them removed before-hand.

One major advantage of removing wisdom teeth early is that the roots are not fully in place and, in some cases, that means a faster and less painful recovery.

You should consider removal of your wisdom tooth/teeth if they are causing the following:

  • YOU HAVE A BUILDUP OF PAIN IN YOUR JAW
  • INFECTION OF THE SOFT TISSUES OF THE MOUTH DEVELOP
  • TOOTH DECAY IS SIGNIFICANT
  • TUMORS OR CYSTS DEVELOP IN THE MOUTH
  • YOUR WISDOM TEETH ARE CAUSING A MISALIGNMENT OR SOME OTHER TYPE OF DAMAGE TO THE OTHER TEETH
