Noticing Signs of Eroding Tooth Enamel

Tooth enamel, which protects your teeth, is the hardest substance in the human body, but it is not invulnerable. It cannot regenerate itself after damage or injury, like bones or skin can. Once it is damaged, it will not grow back. However, enamel can be restored through dentistry with a composite resin material. Enamel doesn’t always get damaged all at once, like a crack or chip. Tooth enamel can erode over time and erosion leaves the teeth susceptible to decay, damage, and possibly tooth loss. If you notice any of the following signs of eroding enamel, talk to your dentist.

YOUR TEETH FEEL SENSITIVE

The inner parts of your teeth have nerves as you might know, but enamel does not. At its strongest, tooth enamel protects the inner tissues of your teeth from feeling anything when you bite or chew. If the enamel begins to erode and gets weaker, you may begin feeling tinges of pain from hot or cold foods.

IT BECOMES DIFFICULT TO CHEW

The inner tissues of your teeth can be exposed if your teeth have severely eroded enamel. This can make it very painful and difficult to bite and chew. If bacteria has reached the inner areas of a tooth, a filling or a root canal treatment may be necessary to remove any infection.

YOUR SMILE LOOKS DULL & YELLOW

Even though tooth enamel is strong, it is thin and translucent. The underlying tooth layer, which is called the dentin, can be seen through the enamel. As enamel wears down and the layer gets thinner, more of the inner tissue can be seen. If this is the situation, be careful with whitening treatments at home especially the erosive treatments like activated charcoal. Talk to your dentist about whitening your teeth as only an expert will notice if the dull, yellowing appearance is due to eroding enamel.
