Fix a Chipped or Cracked Tooth with Porcelain Veneers

We use our teeth every day to bite and chew foods, some soft, others are very hard and sticky, which can place a great deal of stress on the teeth. Over a period of time, our teeth may eventually weaken, especially if a person practices poor dental habits. A tooth that has become weak is more susceptible to cracks, chips, or even fractures. Although a small crack or chip may not impact a person’s ability to chew, it can drasticall effect the appearance of their smile. Porcelain veneers can cover up a wide range of aesthetic flaws, including chipped or cracked teeth, which will enhance the beauty of your smile. Dr. Adrian Guerra offers porcelain veneers for chipped teeth at his North Palm Beach, FL dental practice. Dr. Guerra’s restorations allow his patients to enjoy an attractive, healthy-looking smile once again.

PORCELAIN VENEER CANDIDATES

Porcelain veneers are without a doubt one of the most versatile cosmetic dentistry treatments. They are suitable for patients with a variety of cosmetic dental concerns. Porcelain veneers are commonly placed to conceal cracked or chipped teeth. As long as a crack or chip is not too severe, porcelain veneers would be an appropriate treatment for many patients. Porcelain veneers are especially well-suited to patients who have additional cosmetic concerns, such as, improving tooth color, correcting minor spacing issues, and creating a more uniform and beautiful smile.

Patients should be aware however that if a crack or chip is large enough to compromise the strength of the tooth, or if the crack or chip exposes the sensitive inner layers of the tooth, restorative dentistry treatment may be needed. Dr. Guerra would perform a thorough examination and let the patient know if porcelain veneers are the best treatment option available.

PORCELAIN VENEER TREATMENT PROCESS

Proper porcelain veneers treatment usually requires two dental appointments set several weeks apart. The initial appointment allows Dr. Guerra to design a set of veneers that will best complement each patient’s smile, as well as prepare the teeth for the proper placement of the porcelain veneers. When planning each set of veneers, Dr. Guerra will take into consideration the size, shape and color of the patient’s adjacent teeth. He will also take into consideration the patient’s facial proportions and features.

To properly ensure that the porcelain veneers fit properly and sit flush with the natural teeth, Dr. Guerra will need to prepare the teeth that will be treated with the porcelain veneers. Dr. Guerra preps these teeth by removing a small amount of tooth enamel. The amount of enamel that is removed is minimal, but it will leave the teeth vulnerable, so you will permanently require the protection of porcelain veneers. After preparing the teeth and taking molds that will be used to fabricate the final set of veneers, Dr. Guerra will place temporary restorations. These temporary restorations will protect the teeth while we wait for the patient’s porcelain veneers to be completed.

The last treatment stage is usually completed at the second dental appointment. Dr. Guerra will schedule this appointment after the permanent veneers have arrived at our office. After testing the veneers for fit and comfort, they will be bonded to the patient’s teeth. A dental compound is used to place the veneers and then harden the material with a special dental light. Once the porcelain veneers are in place, they will protect the teeth and improve the appearance of the patient’s smile for ten to fifteen years.
