What to Know Before Getting a Dental Crown

Replacing missing teeth can be a stressful process for many patients. Dr. Adrian Guerra at AMG Dental Group leads an experienced staff who are dedicated to helping each patient achieve a healthier and more beautiful smile. Leaving missing teeth untreated, you are at a higher risk of developing an infection, gum disease, tooth decay and bone loss.

SINGLE TOOTH DENTAL IMPLANT

If you are missing a single tooth, one implant and a crown can replace it. A dental implant replaces both the lost natural tooth and its root. Over the course of a few months, the dental implant will begin to fuse into the jawbone creating a strong foundation to support the final restoration. For those patients replacing a single tooth, the final restoration will be a dental crown.

ADVANTAGES OF A SINGLE-TOOTH IMPLANT OVER A BRIDGE?

A dental implant has several advantages over other tooth replacement options. In addition to looking and functioning like a natural tooth, a dental implant replaces a single tooth without sacrificing the health of neighboring teeth. The other common treatment for the loss of a single tooth, a tooth-supported fixed bridge, requires that adjacent teeth be ground down to support the cemented bridge.

Because a dental implant will replace your tooth root, the bone is better preserved. With a bridge, some of the bone that previously surrounded the tooth begins to deteriorate. Dental implants help to keep the bone healthy and intact. In the long run, a single implant can be more esthetically pleasing and easier to keep clean than a bridge.

A DENTAL IMPLANT IS MADE OF THREE PARTS:

The dental implant, the abutment, and the dental crown. The dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically implanted into the jaw bone (not as bad as it sounds). Typically, a dental implant will need three to six months to heal completely. During this time, Dr. Guerra may fit you for a temporary dental restoration.

Once the dental implant fuses into the jaw bone, Dr. Guerra will attach your custom made abutment. The abutment is the connector between the dental implant and the dental crown. Impressions of the teeth are taken to create a custom-designed dental crown.

Once the dental crown is fabricated, Dr. Guerra will remove the temporary restoration and carefully secure your dental crown to the abutment. In the end, patients will have a natural looking, beautiful solution for their missing teeth. Dental implants are so natural-looking and feeling, you may forget you ever lost a tooth.
